Looks like Lamb and Hall will have a challenge on their hands out on the track today...
The pilots in the MXS-Rs with their tall winglets might find it difficult to get close to the pylon on that tight turn of gate three, I wouldn't want to get too close if I had winglets...
Masters Training 1 is Go! We join the action...
Chambliss completes his first runs in the track with a time of 54.603
Chambliss' first run in the track has been his most successful so far... he might be figuring out some new racing lines and running through all the options to find the best line for Qualifying
Spain's Juan Velarde is next up... he picks up penalties in three of his four runs through the track. But Run 2 is a clean sweep and it's 53.628 on the board.
USA's Michael Goulian is next into the track...
The timings boards are red, red, red as he picks up a handful of +2 second penalties. Is he struggling to find his lines or just testing out different tactics in the track?
Looks like a 56.256 for Goulian, timings to be confirmed
Le Vot in the track and yet more red on the results board as he picks up a penalty for deviating from the track... missing an Air Gate altogether!
Clean pass for Run 2 and only enough time for a third run through the track. Le Vot clocks in 58.784, way off the pace
The track is fine. You have to be set up correctly for Gates 3 and 4 or you’ll miss it.
It was a good flight, I made some mistakes, but I’m happy everything went to plan and I followed the lines I planned. The north part of the track is tricky and that’s where we’ll win or lose the race.
Pylon down and Air Gators are out on the water. Czech pilot Martin Sonka up next.
The wind has swung from the North to the East this afternoon but air pressure and wind speed remain pretty constant out by the Race Tower.
Sonka in the track and it's that tricky Gate 3 that's causing problems again as he picks up a penalty for incorrect level flying... and then another for climbing too high through Gate 4! Those two Air Gates are definitely causing headaches for the pilots today...
But he knocks five seconds off his time in Run 2 as he makes a clean pass through the track. Has he nailed it?
Another penalty picked up at Gate 3 on his third run, but his Run 2 times are putting Sonka at the top of the timings...
52.809 for Sonka. Dolderer up next.
Dolderer seems to have his racing lines clear in his mind as he sweeps in with two clean runs and the fastest time so far today.
A faultless performance so far from the German as he's yet to pick up a penalty. Gates 3 and 4 posing no problems at all for Dolderer.
Dolderer leaps into first place with 52.205 – he's now the man to beat as France's Nicolas Ivanoff takes to the track
Gate 4 throwing up problems for Ivanoff as he gains a +2 second penalty. He doesn't seem too comfortable as he heads into Run 2 but already off the pace of his first Run... No penalties so far but the split times remain in the red
Ivanoff clocks 52.894... that's pretty fast with only Sonka and Dolderer also coming in under 53 seconds so far...
LE VOT 58.784
Hungarian pilot Peter Besenyei is out there along Makuhari beach now... it's been a tough time for the Godfather of the Red Bull Air Race the past year with frustrations due to an underperforming raceplane
He's off to a slow start here in Chiba with 57.686 on the clock... better luck in Qualifying later
And now is the moment the local fans have been waiting for! With a sold out crowd of 60,000 people today everyone is eyes to the sky now for Yoshi Muroya!
Like all the pilots, Muroya gets the chance to fly through the track several times in training - it's the first time any of them get to see if their lines are good...
Race Director Steve Jones calls an over-G for Muroya... but he's got another go to make good!
53.581 for Muroya which places him mid-field... still time to improve in this afternoon's Qualifying though!
Lamb puts in three clean Runs through the track and those winglets don't seem to be posing a problem for the Brit as he clocks in a top time of 53.148. Not a super-fast run, but an error-free session most likely means that Lamb has got more to give...
