Goulian: "The track was tricky but it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. When I saw Pete’s penalty I thought it was going to be really tough. Our tactics for the conditions worked."
The fans are loving it here in Chiba! And now they get to see the Godfather of the Red Bull Air Race... BESENYEI V DOLDERER NOW!
Besenyei is first up and he's the only pilot who's been taking the vertical turn less flat - we think it's due to the plane and handling, but it's certainly not helping with keeping the speed on
What a frustration for the Hungarian but the plane really can't give the performance he needs. We've also got a tailwind pushing into the track and that will be reducing the time between gates - and changing control inputs to approach each gate
It's 59.928 for Besenyei including 4 seconds of penalties
So Dolderer up now and he should be able to guarantee a spot in the Round of 8
And that's not fast, but it's enough – 55.050 sees the German through!
LE VOT V IVANOFF now - the two French pilots go head to head in a national derby!
The wind is really picking up now, we're looking at 5kts faster than in the Round of 14 and a more south-easterly direction. A race analyst here in Chiba says that if there's a tailwind going into the track, it reduces time to line up for gates so could throw off the pilots' planned strategies...
The wind seems to be the biggest factor for the pilots to grapple with today... in contrast to the over G that we were seeing yesterday in Qualifying
A QUICK REMINDER OF WHO'S UP AGAINST WHO IN THE ROUND OF 8 AND IT'S NON-STOP FROM NOW!
GOULIAN V HALL coming up!
194 through the start gate, that's slow for Goulian but he's clean so far
Playing it safe? Could be the way to beat Hall... it's a 52.917 and that's great for Mikey G!
Matt Hall is a real contender for the podium and he generally doesn't make mistakes... 6 times on the podium so far in his career and he beat Lamb in the last round
The Australian is out on the track and looking strong, he's gaining on Goulian and the tight turn for Hall at the end of the track and he's faster than the American! 51.452 and he wins that heat!
