Red Bull Air Race 2015 - Rovinj, Croatia
Red Bull Air Race 2015 - Rovinj, Croatia
The enchanting and historic Adriatic coastal town of Rovinj, Croatia welcomes back Red Bull Air Race
Nigel Lamb up next and he'll be looking to get his performance up to par after a very slow start to the 2015 season. Lamb is straight into the track with a green split time, looking to knock Muroya off the top spot but he's soon losing speed. . . Then we hear he's under review as confirmation comes in of a penalty at Gate 3 for incorrect level flying. That's not good news for Lamb as he clocks in 56. 287. . . +0. 283 behind leader Muroya.
Lamb comes in fast for his second run, and he's obviously learning quickly from his mistakes as he passes cleanly through Gate 3, and again cleanly through the troublesome Gate 4. . . no penalties for Lamb and he clocks in at 54. 403
Time' s up for the British pilot out in the Training session today so 54. 403 puts him into 6th place currently. France's Ivanoff up next. Jim Reed made extensions to Ivanoff's wheel pants last night so let's see if that'll give him any extra speed and precision out there today. . .
Ivanoff clocks 54.568 and he's surely got more to give?
He's back in for another run and the buzzer is off almost immediately!
It's incorrect level at Gate 3, and there goes the buzzer again! It's 57. 730 with 3s - including insufficent smoke. . . that's the first time we've seen that today
Germany's Matthias Dolderer to fly next and he's had some words of wisdom this week from Stratos jumper Felix Baumgartner. . . a fellow pilot who flies helicopters
Quick weather update: Temperature: 20.0C Air Pressure: 1013.5 mbar Wind: 10-13kts SSW
Dolderer was in the 54s ballpark in yesterday's training and if he can hold it together then we could see some further WC points this weekend
Dolderer says every day has its own laws. . .
It's incorrect level at Gate 7 straight away for Dolderer so 2s in penalties
57. 650 on the clock. . . even with the penalty he's off his earlier pace
And he's back for another go, can he clean up and make his line better for Gate 7?
Oh it's a penalty at Gate 8 this time. . . and 56. 068 on the clock and he shakes his head at that time! Back to base for Dolderer
He's down in 8th place so far, with just Hall and Bonhomme to fly
They 'll be tough to beat our here in Rovinj, both are consistent and steady under pressure
The Australian heads out and he's looking to lose the bridesmaid tag this weekend – he's all in for the win! It's 54. 951 clean and he's got another attempt to better that time. . .
Last go and we're seeing red on the split times so it doesn't look like he can beat Muroya's time. . .
He'll need to shave off a second. . . and it's 53. 515 and he does it! Great flying from Hall!
If there's one pilot who can put an end to Hall's podium dream it's Bonhomme. . . riding high after back-to-back wins so far in 2015
It's predictable. . . and he's in the green already! We know Bonhomme could walk this race but c'mon give the others a chance! And there it is! A pylon hit for the Brit!
55 . 726 with the pylon. . . "You have to try these things" says Bonhomme although his team looks unimpressed back at the Race Airport. . .
OK we don't want to jinx things here but that's the buzzer again. . .
This time it's for insufficient smoke. . . not a big deal in training and he posts 54. 457 including the 1s penalty so it's still looking OK for Bonhomme
That puts Hall, Muroya and Arch at the top of the final training timesheet. . . official results to follow
Hall fastest in Training 4
We're straight into Challenger Cup Qualifying NOW!
First up is Peter Podlunsek from Slovenia
It's 1:07.723 including 2s inc level Gate 9 . . .
Next it's the Brazilian pilot Francis Barros. . .
1:10. 090 clean for Barros. . . that won't get him the Quali victory today :(
Just a quick wait as we prepare for Brageot to take to the track. Wind conditions are picking up out there this afternoon, around 10 - 14. 2kts SW-SSW with some light gusts. With the pylons out on floating fixed barges on the water, the Challengers will be looking for maximum precision through those Air Gates and Chicane.
