Good morning from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway as we get set for Qualifying for both the Challenger Cup and Master Class!
We've just concluded the first of the flying sessions here at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, with the four Challenger Class pilots participating here having posted their final Free Practice times. A quick recap on the competitors here with us in the USA:
We're running a reduced field for two reasons: 1. Cristian Bolton, who was scheduled to fly here, has moved up to the Master Class for the last two races of 2016 and 2. Francis Barros will not fly this weekend due to personal reasons.
Yesterday, in Free Practice 1 and 2, we saw some exciting form from British competitor Ben Murphy...
Track conditions at IMS:
Wind max last 10 min: 12 kts
Temperature: 14.7 ℃
Air Pressure: 984.8 mbar
So the big question is can Murphy maintain a lead here or will American pilot Kevin Coleman get the better of him?
CHALLENGER CLASS FREE PRACTICE 3 RESULTS:
We'll have a results story to follow shortly...
Coleman posted 01:14.427, which was 00:01.657 ahead of Murphy – both were penalty free
Each had three runs in the track, which features 16 Air Gates and a standing start
Coleman did pick up penalties for his third run – incorrect passing of gate 4
But Murphy suffered a pylon hit at Gate 5 on his second run, cleaning it up for the third go...
French pilot Melanie Astles was way off the winning pace +4.573 off Coleman's time... and each of her three runs were marred by a mixed bag of penalties
With 60 minutes to go until Master Class Free Practice 3, we thought we'd take a look at what everyone has been up to here in Indy...
Big weekend for Chilean pilot Cristian Bolton... who steps up to the Master Class for the last two remaining rounds of 2016!
Bolton already caught the eye of our expert analyst after yesterday's performance in the track – he managed to climb three places between sessions and told us that he's feeling very comfortable out there...
With two American pilots in the Master Class, this is an exciting race for the fans here in Indy – where motorsport is BIG news!
Kirby Chambliss is currently sitting in fourth place overall on 30.25 points – if he scores a podium in front of the home fans, this will move him up... and with just one race remaining after Indy, he could be on the 2016 World Championship podium
And for those of you who want the full story on the Challenger Cup final Free Practice result, where local hero Coleman pushed past Ben Murphy... here it is!
