He's red on the split times as expected and it's a respectable debut for the newcomer, even if that time is well off the pace
It's 1:17.831 for Genevey
So that's the end of that session and we'll have the official results soon so hang tight :)
And then we're coming LIVE from San Diego for the Master Class Qualifying, where it's expected we'll see some really tight racing out over the Bay!
OFFICIAL CHALLENGER QUALIFYING RESULTS:
MASTER CLASS QUALIFYING STARTLIST:
So we are just moments away from the San Diego Qualifying and it's a glorious day in California!
Perfect flying conditions out in the track today – 8kts wind, coming from the W
We hear from the Race Committee that France's Mika Brageot will not participate in Qualifying due to a technical issue, so it's Slovenia's Peter Podlunsek who flies first today
Podlunsek will set the pace today and it's all about being tactical here with the two runs that each pilot gets. Usually the first run is about laying down a safe time... and the second for going all out
Podlunsek is through the track but that's the buzzer at Gate 10 and 2s in penalties...
1:01.933 on the clock
Let's hope for something better second time around...
But he's been caught out at Gate 10 by over-rolling here and that's a tough one for the Slovenian pilot... he could well find himself up against one of the fastest pilots in tomorrow's Round of 14. He posts 1:01.566
Next up is Japan's Yoshi Muroya, who absolutely obliterated the track record in today's FP3
It's great flying from Muroya but he makes an error in judgement and that's the buzzer for too high at Gate 3... that puts the pressure on for his second run. It's a 1:01.739 including 2s in penalties
Flying his newly repainted Edge 540, it's hard to miss the Japanese pilot out there in the track... he's got it all to work for now... and it's green on the split times, but there is the buzzer again and it's 1:01.384 inc 2s in penalties for incorrect level Gate 14
Petr Kopfstein flies next...
The first of the two Czech pilot is cleared into the track... it's penalty-riddled! Picking up 6s that is a disaster!
1:05.570 on the clock and penalties at Gates 3,4 and 7 for Kopfstein
Second chance for Kopfstein and this is much better – he's really got it together this time – it's green all the way and importantly, error free! It's 1:00.331 and he moves into the top spot!
Now it's the first of our home heroes as Kirby Chambliss prepares to go for it!
We hear there have been serious efforts by the team since Abu Dhabi to make improvements to his Edge 540 so we wonder if we'll see it all come together for him here in front of the fans
Chambliss has flown every San Diego race in history and should feel comfortable out in the track – his FP result wasn't great though, where he finished in 8th
We're seeing red then green, then back to red on the split times so he's struggling with parts of the track
It's solid though and disciplined, says Bonhomme from the commentary box, as Chambliss posts 1:00.753
And Chambliss has another go to put things right out there and secure an advantage in tomorrow's Round of 14 head to heads...
He's looking great this time, and it's green all the way! 1:00.256 puts him ahead of Kopfstein at the top of the timesheets
Australia's Matt Hall flies next, gaining valuable track time in his Edge 540 V3 which he debuts here in San Diego
All eyes have been on the Australian this week as he has been getting to grips with his new raceplane – but it seems he's been doing his homework as he posts 59.516 clean!
