Chambliss: "I went out and wanted to lay down a good time, but on the second one I really went for it. I thought it would have been a little faster than that though and that time won't stand against the other guys."
Five pilots have flown so far and the standings are Hall // Chambliss // Kopfstein // Muroya // Podlunsek
Exciting news for the French pilot – he's planning to unveil a new Edge 540 V3 in Budapest in the summer – which could be a turning point in his race career if it performs as he's indicated
He's steady out there but there's just not the pace that's need to catch Hall – although it's a personal best for Le Vot with a 1:01.097
He's got a second run to go and he may well have more in the tank!
Bonhomme says the race lines look good but he just can't squeeze any more speed from the machine... and he picks up 1s for insufficient smoke, which hasn't helped
Le Vot posts 1:02.843 and he stays at 4th so far with seven pilots to fly...
- Pylon Hit!
Chile's Cristian Bolton is cleared into the track. Flying the Edge 540 V2 it's difficult to really make headway against the faster teams out there... but a pylon hit for Bolton at Gate 4 won't help :(
Bolton picks up 3s straight away and has to soldier on to try to claw it back... his first run is 1:04.156 which puts him right at the bottom of the table...
Let's wait for the Airgators to clean up out there and then Bolton will get the chance to remedy that disappointing run
- Pylon Hit!
Bolton's back! And that's a little high in the chicane and that throws him off and leads to another pylon hit again at Gate 4! That is really disastrous for the Chilean – and he'll have to fly against one of the fastest pilots tomorrow
It's 1:05.037 and he's got some work to do tomorrow!
Hall: "I was surprised we are catching up so quick. I'm starting to feel more at home, but I pushed up against the line a bit hard. We know we'll get there. If we get in the Final 4 we've probably got a little left we can do."
Goulian – the second of our US pilots – flies now
After a DNF in FP3 for over G, Goulian is really on form here in Qualifying!
Goulian goes all green and that is just what the crowds came here for!
He easily advances past Hall's time and stops the clock in 59.063! He really nailed the end of the chicane to Gate 3 and that is where our expert analyst says the race will be won
Goulian gets a second attempt and he doesn't need to risk anything as he's banked a great spot in the Round of 14 tomorrow
With more than 20,000 fans out in San Diego today watching Qualifying this is the magic the American fans have been waiting for!
It's another phenomenal run – 58.978 secures that top spot! That time is right up there and it'll be a lot of work for Sonka and Dolderer to edge past Goulian
Ivanoff was the winner from San Diego 2009 and is attracting plenty of attention on our return... he's in the track now
But it's incorrect level at Gates 3 and 6 – over rolling out there is not helping his campaign for a repeat win
It's 1:03.197 for Ivanoff and he's way down in 8th with that run
Can he make up for it with his second run? It's not looking that hopeful for Ivanoff so far this week – he was 6th in FP3 earlier and not on the pace
This time he picks up 2s at Gate 11 and will have to settle for 1:01.606 and he stays down in 8th with four to fly...
Goulian: "After the final Free Practice with the over G we decided to go soft on first run but it didn't turn out like that and I got in the groove and it felt good. It's right on the edge to not get a penalty."
Now we have Germany's Matthias Dolderer flying...
Dolderer was 3rd in FP3 earlier today afte a shaky start here in San Diego
And this is him back at his best by all accounts! It's all green and that is bad news for Goulian – 58.332 and Dolderer moves straight into the top spot by + 0.646s
- Pylon Hit!
And his second run is not quite as successful – it's a higher angle at Gate 7, which might have been some experimentation... and there's the pylon hit at Gate 10! It's 1:01.661 but after that great first run he can go home this evening happy that he's found his form here in San Diego
McLeod, Velarde and Sonka still to fly!
